My brochure topic was shoes stores that stock the most
eye-catching shoes in Wellington. I wanted it to reflect the shoes. I decided
to use bright, exciting colours and patterns. Contrasting this with the black
illustrations and images to highlight the distinctive details of the shoes. Using
grids to keep it structured, the booklet is an advertisement for the stores and
therefore has to look professional and clean. For the majority of the project I
feel as though I lacked direction however I think I pulled it together at the
end. If I had found a direction earlier I feel like I would have a more
complete booklet as a whole. I think the weakest part of my design are the
infographics as they could have been developed further. In future I will put
more effort in to the planning phase so that I can have a solid base to begin
with.

Final Brochure
Here is a link to my final brochure. Sadly I had to rush it in the end as I was overtime and not well enough. I feel like it conveys my idea and ticks the boxes required but I wish I had the time to do so much more with it.

Icons V2
Here are my new icons, They are far less cartoony and suit the brochure better. I decided they were easier to read if they were in black outline.

Progress
The brochure is coming along, I fixed up a bunch of the paragraphs and added in the background marks. Luckily I got an extension because I don't think I would have finished in time otherwise. I had some classmates look over it and they gave me a few ideas on how to lay it out better and pointed out several small details I had looked over.

Marks
I finally got around to making those marks for the backgrounds. I'm really happy with how they turned out as they each have a uniqueness to them.

Maps
I though I should post the development of my maps on here as I forgot to leave space in my workbook. I started off tracing a map from google but for my final I ended up geting one form a program called ArcGis that I used in highschool and then thresholding it in photoshop and then editing the lines in Illustrator. It fits better with the style and I plan to have it as a full bleed like my marks.

Icons
I forgot to upload these earlier. but here are my first attempt at icons for the graph thing we need to include. First is stock, second cost and third staff friendliness. They're really basic and cartoony at this stage, I'm not happy with them so will rework them later.

Image tests.
Today I tried out some layouts. Each will cover one half of the spread, the other half containing the relevant information per shop. My classmates think the clearest would be the last however I will nee to try developing this further.

Progress
I've started making my brochure, Progress is kind of slow right now as I have some personal commitments and other classwork to do. At this stage I am going to have a thresholded image, drawing and block of colour related to each place which I will lay out for my spreads. I didn't have much to show in class so my critique was very limited.

Artist models
I researched a few artist models, I was interested in designers who used bright colours as I wanted to use colour to convey the interest in "Crazy shoes". I liked how each designer balanced their positive and negative space. I =really like Neville Brody's use of black on colour to create "blocks". I could do something similar by thresholding my images, this could be used to highlight details on the shoes .

Digital drawings
I created some digital drawings in illustrator for each store. At this stage I am doing Zambesi, Maher and Spacesuit.
Analysis
Today I went over some brochures and magazines to look at their layouts. I was particularly interested in the use of column and grid as it fits with our current exercise of drawing up some of our own. The most common are vary structured with 2-3 columns, these are easy to read and logically laid out. Others use an implied grid which although looks random, is can be very effective at drawing the eye across the page.

Collages
I made a quick digital collage for each store, theyre very rushed as I was pushed for time this week.

Drawings
I made some drawings of shoes for each of the stores. I intend to redo them digitally for use in the brochure

Critique
Today while talking to Faye I showed her my marks. We both agreed that I was a bit lost with the theme of each store so we went over them again together and made a new list.
Saturday, March 19, 2016
Marks
I made bunch of marks for each store using a variety of media including paint, pen and chalk. From here I photographed each mark then thresholded them on Photoshop to create objects I could easily add to the brochure.

Photos.
Today I took a bunch of photos at each store, It's easier to see the m in my workbook so I have put the Majority in there. As you can see from the photos each store has a different aesthetic which I hope to capture with my marks.

Show stopper shoes
Today Faye helped me flesh out my ideas, I am doing a guide to the craziest shoe stores in wellington.
Zambesi:
A high fashion store that stocks some industrial looking shoes
A high fashion store that stocks some industrial looking shoes
Maher:
A New Zealand shoe store that sells over the top decorative shoes
Spacesuit:
An importer of preowned Vintage shoes, with a mix of American and Japanese stock
GUBBS: is another option in case the others look similar, however they tend to specialize in more "Mum" orientated shoes

Indesign Basics tutorial
I just completed my Indesign tutorial at Lynda.com. It was really basic but I feel as though it has really helped jog my memory since type last year.
WHAT ARE THOSE?
Current Brochure Theme
Places to find the craziest shoes in Wellington
(Working Title)
My current theme is Where to find the craziest shoes, I intend to showcase the most ridiculous and eye catching shoes in the region and the stores that sell them. I created a brainstorm in my workbook to help define the different categories and shops. I want to play off the internet meme "What are thooooseee" to help keep the project fun and relevant to my peers.
Class Critique
On Thursday we had a critique session. My group liked most of my ideas. They suggested to change the "Where to find a dead body" idea to either "Places to hide a body" or "Places to get away with a crime" as they might be a bit broader. My number one choice was "Where to find the sickest kicks" however this was too normal and Faye helped me develop this into a new idea, " Where to find the craziest shoes". This would include a far wider range highlighting the quirky and strange shoes available within the city.

My 3+ Ideas
Here are my ideas in the order to most liked to least.
- Sickest places to buy some kicks (Shoes)
This brochure will showcase the best places to buy shoes within Wellington, I want each example to be a step up in the price range, from mainstream shoes to high fashion.
- Places to find cool dogs
Who doesn't want this. A Wellington guide to dog spotting, this will include various locations in where people can spot cool dogs.
- Places to find a dead body
Hardly promotes Wellington but I was told it has to be creative/quirky, Researching old news articles I will put together a guide in which bodies have been found. Hopefully there will be some notorious areas to showcase.
- Grossest McDonalds
First day
Yesterday was my first day of course. We had an introductory lecture that outlined our project for this semester. Our current theme is Puna, "the place where ideas come from". For the project we need to create a brochure that details a specific theme or activity within wellington in three different locations. During class we were separated into groups and had some time to brainstorm ideas.
